Laminate floors are basically an image bonded to a wooden core which is coated in a durable plastic top layer. This surface is more resistant to damage than a real wood floor but the floor will lack the character and feel of real wood. Always easy to fit even with basic DIY skills and lower costs make them the first choice for many. Modern laminates are available in a variety of styles and thicknesses to suit all budgets.
Traditionally the benchmark for quality in wooden flooring, available in styles from traditional country to more contemporary finishes with guaranteed character that will develop a natural patina over time. Solid oak is still a great choice for use in suitable environments and will last for a lifetime if installed and care for correctly. Solid wood floors can be nailed to suitable wooden sub floors or glued to sound concrete slabs. Solid wood flooring installations are more prone to problems than engineered wood.
Engineered wood flooring is a very versatile product and is much more resistant to fluctuations in humidity than solid wood. Engineered boards are manufactured by bonding a hardwood wear layer to a ply core (either soft or hardwood). The wear layer will look and feel identical to a solid wood board. Most engineered floors can be floated over under floor heating. 14 or 15mm boards are suitable for floated or glued down installations over a suitable sub floor. Thicker 18 and 20mm boards can also be nailed to a sound timber sub-floor
